The Paper Runway
Garden Skirt, Mona Waterhouse.
Ball gowns, business suits, stilettos, hats, vests; what do these items have in common? If you guessed clothing and accessories made from paper, you'd be correct! The Museum is pleased to announce "The Paper Runway".
This juried exhibition features over 50 individual works of paper art. The exhibit was on display in the T-Gate exhibition area of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (the world's busiest airport) from January 2009 until March 2010. During the summer of 2010 it was on display at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft in Houston, Texas. It will later travel to the La Sala Galeria de Arte in Santiago, Chile.
The artists are from around the world including England, Chile, Israel, Tibet, Japan, Canada and the United States. Each work of art reflects a different style of papermaking. Some artists made the paper from banana leaf fibers, or recycled cotton rags while others used found objects such as coffee filters.
The jury includes: Mariana Kaplun, Curator from the Museo des Belles Artes, Anna Embree, Professor of Book Arts from the University of Alabama, Louis Knaus, Professor of Textile Design from Moore College of Design in Philadelphia, and Lamar Renford and David Vogt of the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Arts Program.
The curators for the exhibition are Kate Martinson, Professor of Textiles and Paper at Luther College and Winnie Radolan, Senior Lecturer in papermaking at the Book Arts and Printmaking Department at University of the Arts and Cindy Bowden, Museum Director.
