U.S. paper companies took the lead in what would eventually
become the conservation movement.
David Clark Everest, an early advocate
of recycling and environmental protection, observed, "There is only one boat in this
industry, and everyone who has anything to do with the
pulp and paper is on it." His insights into changes
related to conservation, forest management, labor relations,
and the role of government in regulating business were
unequaled.
The Institute of Paper Chemistry (IPC) was incorporated as
an educational institution in affiliation with Lawrence
College in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Black Monday - The Great Depression began. The kraft industry
and by extension the container industry were hardest hit.
