Position: Chemical Engineering Internship at Glatfelter for Summer 2008

Description

 

We are looking for a chemical engineering / pulp & paper student to work as a process engineering intern for this summer.  The applicant should have at least 2 years of college education (sophomore or later) in chemical engineering and/or pulp & paper science.  Graduate students are also eligible for the internship.  The intern will assist in corporate-wide responsibility for carrying out projects and investigations that focus on process improvement, pollution prevention, and waste minimization.  The intern will work in the Engineering and Analytical Services Group of the  Corporate Environmental Department at Glatfelter located in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania.

Position: Product Development Projects Leader

Description

 

Omya is seeking an individual to take the lead in our North American paper grade product development projects. This position reports directly to Omya's North American Product Development Manager. Omya is actively developing new grades for both filler and coatings grade applications.

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with Omya's North American product development team, technical paper sales team, paper laboratory staff as well as Omya's Research and Development team in Oftringen, Switzerland. He or she will be responsible for planning, directing and reporting on lab studies (drawdowns and handsheets) carried out by development technicians. The person will also plan, execute and report on pilot coater , pilot paper machine and mill trials at customer locations. These studies may be internal, development only or external with technical sales and customer participation. The product development engineer will be expected to develop relationships with counterparts working on R&D within Omya and in the paper industry. Some travel is required to attend trials, conferences, etc. As progress is made on projects, the development engineer will be expected to prepare and deliver technical papers at paper industry conferences / seminars such as TAPPI, PIRA, etc. Travel requirement is estimated to be no more than 25%. This individual’s key focus will be to design and present heat transfer systems for both new and existing installations that have competitive advantages and also to guide R&D and product development in order to yield both innovative and strategic designs.  This is a key, strategic leadership role, essential for the continued growth and success of the organization. As such, the position reports directly to the General Manager of the Goslin Division and will be located at corporate headquarters in Mason, OH.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review an operating evaporator system with respect to capacity, operability and energy efficiency and develop a resolution that meets the customer’s desired goal, while at the same time having a strategic advantage over competitor’s solution.
  • Develop a tactical plan to focus R&D efforts in order to find new products that improve our technical and commercial market position.
  • Ability to survey an existing heat transfer system in order to diagnose and rectify operational issues under difficult circumstances, while maintaining a constructive relationship with customer.
  • Organize, write and develop a presentation strategy, where an outcome goal is first established and a corresponding outline is designed to accomplish the goal.  After which, the detailed presentation is produced in PowerPoint using illustrations and animations.
  • Ability to correlate commercial and business aspect with technical solution.
  • Partner with Sales Management both in satisfying the commercial requirements, such as Performance Guarantees, with technical solutions that meet them without excessive technical margin.
  • Understanding of KBC’s competitors with respect to personnel and preferred solutions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires an individual with a minimum of a Bachelor's of Science degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Requires minimum of 6-10 years of experience with heat transfer equipment, in either design or operations, preferably in the Pulp & Paper industry.
  • Requires a professional who is a self-motivated and aggressive who can develop strategies, make decisions and move the effort forward.

Major Job Responsibilities:

will involve aspects of printing technology as it supports product development, manufacturing, marketing and competitive analysis.

Accountabilities:

  • Organizes, plans and evaluates print trials for R&D prototypes, mill manufactured products, and marketing studies.
  • Provides support during print trials which includes –
  • Testing during trials such as ink set times and crack at fold rating.
  • Sampling and coding plain paper, printed samples, and ink samples and coordinating their shipping.
  • Performs analysis of print trial printed samples and prepares and submits samples to the Print Testing Group in R&D.
  • Provides documented summary of print trial press-room notes and sample analysis.
  • Stays up to date on current and future trends of printing press and bindery technology.
  • Supports the work of the Printing Technology Group.

 

Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree in Graphic Arts or Printing Technology.
  • Experience in Printing Technology, Graphic Media or Graphic Communication desired.
  • Experience working in a printing industry, preferably in both sheet fed and web press environments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of printing equipment, ink chemistry, with emphasis on its impact on coated paper printing.
  • Knowledge of coated paper construction and paper interaction with the printing process desired.

1.)Process Engineer/Utility Area (boilers, power generators,condensers, evaporators,etc.). Any M.E., Ch.E. or EE will be considered. Typical areas for attention: boiler/generator/fuel efficiency; steam control and balance; feedwater and recirculation; reduction and control of air/water/solid wastes; myriad electronic/hydraulic/air controls.

2.) Process Engineer/Paper Machines. Any M.E., Ch.E., Pulp and Paper, perhaps E.E. (controls). Typical areas for attention: mass/energy balances; energy consumption (e.g. drying); paper "recipes" and stock prep; chemical application and consumption; raw/in process material handling in a broad sense-pipes,pumps, valves, belts, drives, gears, presses; water usage and recycling; fiber formation, consumption and recovery, etc.

Generalizing: A terrific place for a beginning engineer to "try out" his/her understanding of the profession and its multiple theories, then find a branch that appeals, from production to process/technical engineering and project engineering.

  • Develops procedures for sample preparations to be used at Unidyne-lab, and evaluates and analyzes samples. Maintains all required documents.
  • Performs analysis/evaluation of Unidyne products and competitors' products, identifies Daikin's and competitors' weaknesses, strengths, and issues, and utilizes the information to supports Sales Department and for new product development.
  • Promptly provides customer feedback to appropriate departments such as Production, QC, and Sales.
  • Assists QA Department in development of specifications for Unidyne products and raw materials.
  • Assists Unidyne Production Department in quality problem troubleshooting, and during production of new products.
  • Providestechnical assistance to Purchasing Department when purchasing raw materials, test equipment and instruments, etc. for Unidyne.
  • Supports QA Department when customers' complaints are received. Works closely with customers and QA Department to resolve problems.
  • Responsible for incoming (for experiments) and outgoing (to customers) samples, making sure all procedures and regulations are strictly adhered to. When disposal is necessary, prepares required documentation.
  • Assists Environmental and Safety Departments when environmental/safety test data for Unidyne needs to be obtained, as well as with development and modification of MSDS.
  • Assists in inspection and startup of new test equipment and processes, and modification of processes.
  • Responsible for conforming to all health, safety, and environmental requirements and regulations.
  • Works to maintain department budget.
  • Assists actively in training new members.
  • Performs housekeeping and preventive maintenance associated with the work area and other related areas, and in the laboratory.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

  • At least a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Fiber/Textile Chemistry or related scientific field from an accredited university/college, and at least 5 years of industrial experience preferably with fluorochemicals for treating fabrics and carpets or other related products.
  • Ability to use PC's and corresponding software packages as tools for the job.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); abilities to develop reports and reference documents to submit to customers, as well as to have positive discussions with customers during visits, and express one's ideas clearly.
  • Ability to conduct physicochemical and chemical tests, and to analyze chemical analysis.
  • Motivational skills and good human relations skills are required to develop internal consensus in all functional areas to accomplish the goals
  • Enthusiasm, perseverance and curiosity are plus qualities.

Hydrocyclone Service Engineer

GL&V USA has an opening for a Hydrocyclone Service Engineer with the Cleaner Product Team. The position will assist in supporting the Southern Region (specifically the Central Gulf States ) and will report to the Business Manager, Cleaner Product Group.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support customers by attending mill shut downs and evaluating mechanical soundness of the systems in question.
  • Provide objective service reports to mills and generate recommended spare parts list used as the basis for aftermarket parts quotes/system upgrades
  • Provide services directed towards effective system optimization by conducting mill audits, recommending operating parameter modifications, and upgrade recommendations.
  • Generate new capital projects through effective mill trials that will result in realistic capital proposals through ROI analysis.
  • Will maintain Outlook based itinerary, generate service reports, make product upgrade recommendations, and offer ideas for new product development.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidate must be highly Process and Mechanically oriented.
  • Five (5) years in the Pulp and Paper industry or equivalent education.
  • Ability to travel approximately 70% (most travel is day travel).
  • Ability to relocate to the Central Gulf area (MS, LA, AR).
  • Extensive process knowledge related to pulp/paper machine wet end approach systems.
  • Understanding of mass balances and ability to learn and perform wet end audits with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to generate new Capital Projects through trials, data collection and analysis.
  • Mechanical aptitude with ability to evaluate system soundness through physical inspection.
