Lesson Plan: Portrait Watermarks

Objectives:

Students will study portrait watermarks of John F. Kennedy, Moses, and George Washington. They will also learn about these men and the events that inspired the watermarks. Students will then create a portrait of a classmate.

Resources:

George Washington watermark
JFK watermark
Moses watermark

Materials:

  1. paper for sketching and for watercolors
  2. pencil
  3. erasers
  4. watercolors
  5. brushes
  6. cups of water

Vocabulary:

Portrait -
a representation of a person such as a sculpture or picture
Profile -
a side view

QCC Objectives for 7th grade visual arts:

A1 - Identifies elements of design (line, color, shape, texture, value, space, form) in artworks and in the environment.
A4 - Recognizes how the illusion of mass is created by color, line, or texture in two- dimensional artworks.
B7 - Creates the illusion of mass in a two-dimensional artwork by using color, line, or texture.
B8 - Uses drawings created for the purpose of trying out ideas (a study).
B13- Produces an art product from each art area: drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and crafts.
B14- Demonstrates proper care and safe use of art tools and materials.
C15- Recognizes that art has communicated ideas and feelings as well as depicted objects throughout historical periods.
D23- Justifies reasons for preference for styles of art and products of art.

1. Learn:

Walk students through or allow them to explore the student web pages on portrait watermarks. If students explore the pages independently, discuss what they saw while they were searching. You may want to use some of the discussion questions on the pages.

2. Do:

Divide the class into pairs. Have students decide whether they want to do a profile portrait or one with a straight view. Each student should make a few practice sketches of his/her model. Then he should do a very light sketch of his model on watercolor paper. Complete the portrait with watercolors.

3. Evaluate:

Have a class critique of the portraits. See if they can all be matched to their model.
