QNA's 1. Materials Selection: Are criteria coming or does anything go up to the 10% of the sailboard by weight? I think one will need to add some type block, perhaps wooden, to anchor the mast in the board. Some type of water-proofing will need to be added, plus some sort of anti-skid material on the top surface. It is not in the spirit of the competition to make use of other materials such as metals and plastics to form the skin or main re-enforcement of the board even if the weight is kept below 10%. The use of synthetic or re-generated celluloses as a foam core for the board is not allowed. The bulk of the material should be wood pulp based. 2. What, if any materials are OK to use: i.e. fiberglass scrim OK or not OK Only a minimum of other materials is allowed. The main "other" material would be a block to anchor the mast. The only other non pulp materials to be used are coatings, fillers, and adhesives that would or could be used in the paper industry. 3. Any bonus for using recycled/reclaimed material? Only in terms of the judges view of this as development of novel materials or novel functional chemicals from wood. Also in terms of minimizing energy and material costs, the use of recycled materials may provide benefit. 4. Industrial mentors here could be a corrugated plant and chemical supplier. Is is OK to have more than one industrial mentor? I think active participation from many industrial mentors should be applauded and encouraged. 5. What is your definition of reconstituted cellulose and also solution cellulose? Any cellulose that has been solubilized and recast, molded, injected etc., as a film or other solid. The cellulose used in the construction must be of fibrous form. NOTE: Reconstituted cellulose can be interpreted as cellulose II, which is present in fiber after pulp processing. 6. Our team would like to know if the 10% limitation on binder and adhesive materials/chemicals includes original binder found in boxboard and honeycomb material. i.e. If we were to use honeycomb in our board and the manufacturer of the product used x amount of glue are we required to include that in our calculations, or is it just the additional chemical and material additives the team uses. Thanks for your help, I look forward to hearing back from you. I feel the 10% should be the additional material that is formulated for the specific end use requirements. 7. What are the requirements/guidelines to write the proposal? A: Please see the attached RFP 8. What are the restrictions for raw materials used? A: See comment no. 7 of the scoring protocol i.e, type of fibers used, chemicals, etc 9. What are the restrictions for the sailboard frame? A: See comment no. 8 of the scoring protocol 10. Does the dagger and/or tail fin need to be removable or should it remain permanently attached to the sailboard? A: Either. Judges may award more points to innovative design of dagger board and tail fin. 11. What are the restrictions for the sailboard design? A: See comment 7, no restrictions on the design, the more creative, the more desirable. i.e, how to put it together, wrapping, winding, etc 12. Will teams be permitted to use left-over raw materials from last year's sailboat energy challenge? A: Yes. 13. Is the center board the dagger/tail fin? Or is it something in addition to these? A: Tail fin is at the tail, dagger board is at the center of the board. 14. Do the testing samples need to be sent to IPST prior to the competition? If so, when is the deadline? A: Two weeks before the competition. We will surely let you know when they are due. Please be sure to read all Challenger Newsletters. The first will appear in approximately two-three weeks. 15. What are the testing specs for each property tested? A: See TAPPI Standards 16. How many samples need to be sent for testing per property tested? Please list property and samples needed (size, amount, etc)? (Please include specs) i.e, Smoothness = ? samples coefficient of friction = ? samples contact angle = ? samples puncture test = ? samples static and kinetic coefficients of friction = ? samples roughness = ? samples surface wettability of paper = ? samples absorptivity = ? samples A: See comment 12. 17. How is apparent density determined? Before or after competition? Using the board itself or samples? A: You must calculate volume of board and provide that to us. Your Faculty Project Advisor will sign off and send to us before the race. 18. What are all the thickness restrictions for samples and how may they differ and be determined? A: See comment 12 19. What will be the weight of the mast, boom, sail, anchor, etc? (Please list weights separately) A: We will get this information from our distributor and get back with you ASAP. 20. Do we have to construct the anchor block? A: Yes. 21. What is the function of the anchor block? To hold the dagger in place? etc etc?? A: See comment 14. 22. Are we to construct the rail or do we have to attach the mast foot to the board using paper? If so please specify the brand of mast/mastfoot being used in the competition and if we are to purchase it or if it will be provided for us. A: The mastfoot and base plate being provided are manufactured by Chinook. The base plate is a 2-bolt version which normally attaches to a sailboard with an integrated mast track. What had been discussed for purposes of the competition was to embed a length of wood (2X4 or 2X6) in the deck of the sailboard and attach the plate using two lag bolts. 23.Will novel chemicals derived from wood be counted into the ten percent weight limitations that includes synthetic materials? A: Yes, however, there will be some extra credit built into the overall consideration of this category. 24. How will the tail fin and centerboard be attached to the board? A: This is up to the ingenuity of the team. 25. What exactly is included as scrim material? A: Any preformed woven or non-woven webs. 26. Does it include all forms of fiberglass mats? A: Yes. 27. What types of synthetic fibers are allowed? A: Any. 28.My fellow teammates and myself have been looking everywhere for this Peterson's Publishing Chemical Buyer's Guide and we are having no luck in finding it. No one has heard of this book and also it cannot be found anywhere on the internet or in any library. Can you give us a suggestion that can help us find this guide? A: The Pulp & Paper World Buyer's Guide 2000 is a Miller Freeman Publication. Call customer service at 800-682-8297. Check out the web address to see if you can find it at www.pponline.com (I didn't see it there, maybe you will). I'd call customer service at Miller first. Email me(Project Manager, 404-894-8277) back if you need more help. 29.Can you tell us what size the sail will be? We have reviewed comment 2 but what is the size like a 4, 4.5, 5? A: (FROM Tim Carter our Technical Support Advisor from Windsense) The only direct answer I have is in regard to sail size - what we have provided is 6.0 (square meters). 30.Can we commercially purchase mast track equipment to install the center board, mass foot, and tail fin on the board? This would not be counted as 10% other materials or would it? A: In the spirit of the competition, commercial mast track boxes and/or tail fin boxes are not allowed. See Comment #2 (attached). 31.Comment 12 talks about samples to be submitted for testing. When are these sample due? A: The samples are due on March 4, 2002, with your Final Project Reports. 32.We still have questions about comment 7 and 14. A: Comments 7 and 14 have been re-worded and should be clearer for you to understand. Please re-read them. 33.When will we hear back about how our mid-term report was scored and comments about our report? A: The mid-project report evaluations are due back here on 1/23/02. Shortly thereafter, I will send you information regarding the Review Committee's comments. 34.In the racing of the sailboard in the competition does the racer have to be a university student? Could we have a faculty member or a staff member from the University? A: The racer must be a matriculated full time student from your university. He/she does not have to be from the same department as you are, but must be a matriculated full time student from there. 35.In constructing an anchor plate for the mass foot is it acceptable to use wood? Would the wood be considered part of our 10%? A: YES, READ COMMENT TWO ON THE SCORING PROTOCOL! 36.The way we understand that the 10% chemicals is what we add to the board. Therefore paper that is manufactured with a coating, for example liquid packaging, the coat weight of the coating should not be considered part of the 10%. A: THAT IS CORRECT, SEE COMMENT SEVEN IN THE SCORING PROTOCOL. |
