Nikolai DeMartini rejoined IPST after receiving his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Åbo Akademi University in 2004 as a member of the Combustion and Materials Research Group. He has academic and mill experience in the chemical recovery cycle. He has done research in and taught combustion chemistry and has more recently been studying crystallization and heat transfer fouling and biorefinery integration with pulp mills. He is currently running the pulping, bleaching and chemical recovery laboratories at IPST. As a member of an interactive research staff (see group tab) at IPST, his current research areas include:
- Biomass delignification
- Crystallization & heat transfer fouling
- Solubility studies of industrial solutions
- Pulp mill and chemical recovery cycle process chemistry
- Pulp mill and biorefinery modeling
The facilities are described in more detail under the Research Facilities and Equipment tab, but a brief overview is given here. Facilities include a full pulping and bleaching lab, pressurized crystallizers for studying metastable and solubility limits, on-line and bench top viscometers for studying viscosities of industrial solutions and a laminar entrained flow reactor for studying combustion and gasification at temperatures up to 900 °C at atmospheric conditions.
