Institute of Paper Science and Technology Welcomes New Trustees


Atlanta, Georgia - January 3, 2000 - Throughout its 70 year history, the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Paper Science and Technology (IPST) has enjoyed the participation of the Pulp and Paper Industry's greatest leaders. At a recent Board meeting on November 17, 1999, the Board of Trustees welcomed the following new members: Mr. William B. Howes, Chairman & CEO of Inland Paperboard & Packaging, Inc.; Mr. Arnold N. Nemirow, Chairman of Bowater Corporation; Mr. Steve Newlin, President of Nalco Chemical Company; Mr. Juha Niemelä, President and CEO of UPM-Kymmene Corporation; Mr. L. Pendleton Siegel, Chairman and CEO of Potlatch Corporation; Mr. C. Wesley Smith, Executive Vice President of International Paper Company; and Mr. George H. Weyerhaeuser, Jr., Senior Vice President of Weyerhaeuser Company.

Mr. A. D. “Pete” Correll, Chairman of the IPST Board of Trustees, and Chairman, President and CEO of Georgia-Pacific Corporation, welcomed these gentlemen to the IPST Board of Trustees. Further, Mr. Correll thanked those members leaving the Board for their dedication and service which included Mr. Fredrick Ernst, former President of MacMillan Bloedel Packaging, and Mr. R. Keith Elliot, who recently retired as CEO of Hercules Inc.

Mr. William B. Howes replaces Mr. Clifford J. Grum who is retiring this month as the Chairman and CEO of Temple-Inland, Inc. Mr. Howes is Chairman and CEO of Inland Paperboard & Packaging, Inc. Mr. Howes also serves as Executive Vice President and as a member of the Board of Directors of Temple-Inland, Inc. He is responsible for the company's combined paper operations, including four linerboard mills and two corrugating medium mills, 40 box plants, and six specialty converting plants located throughout the United States, Mexico and South America. Mr. Howes joined Inland, formerly Inland Container Corporation, in 1990 as Executive Vice President and became President and Chief Operating Officer in April 1992.

Mr. Arnold N. Nemirow became CEO of Bowater Corporation in 1995 and Chairman of the Board in 1996. He has served as President of the company since September 1994 and as Chief Operating Officer from 1994 to 1995. Mr. Nemirow was President, CEO and a Director of Wausau Paper Mills Company from 1990 to 1994 and served as Chairman, President, CEO and as a member of the Board of Directors of Nekoosa Papers, Inc., the business paper division of Great Northern Nekoosa Corporation, from 1988 to 1990.

Mr. Steve Newlin joined Nalco Chemical Company in 1976, and became President in 1994. Mr. Newlin was named the General Manager of Pulp and Paper Chemicals in 1992, and later that year was elected Vice President and President of Nalco Pacific. In 1994, he became Group Vice President and President of Nalco Europe. Nalco Chemical Company is the largest provider of water treatment and process chemicals, services and systems in the world. Nalco operates in more than 100 countries and has major manufacturing facilities worldwide.

Mr. Juha Niemelä, President and CEO of UPM-Kymmene Corporation, represents the Institute's first non-North American member company. UPM-Kymmene is one of the largest forest industry enterprises in Europe and in the world. Mr. Niemelä worked in marketing and upper management of United Paper Mills, Ltd. from 1971 through 1996. In 1996, United Paper Mills and Kymmene Corporation merged to form UPM-Kymmene. Mr. Niemelä became President and CEO of the company that year. Mr. Niemelä was recently elected Chairman of the Confederation of European Paper Industries, a Brussels-based organization representing 17 member countries with 1,000 pulp, paper and board producing companies throughout Europe.

Mr. L. Pendleton Siegel, is replacing Mr. John M. Richards who retired last year as Chairman and CEO of Potlatch Corporation. Siegel who joined Potlatch in 1979 as Manager of Strategic Planning, was elected Vice President of Finance in 1983 and subsequently held executive positions in Finance and Planning, as well as the company's wood and pulp-based operations. In 1993 he was elected Executive Vice President of pulp-based operations and planning, and in 1994 he was elected President and COO. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1997. Potlatch is a diversified forest products company with more than 1.5 million acres of timberland.

Mr. C. Wesley Smith is the Trustee representative of International Paper, one of IPST's newest members. Mr. Smith joined International Paper in 1980 and has held manufacturing, technical, general managerial and executive positions. In 1989, Mr. Smith was elected President of International Paper Europe with responsibility for the company's European operations. He returned to the United States in 1992 and was elected Executive Vice President of Printing Papers. He currently serves as Executive Vice President-Operations for International Paper and also serves on its Board of Directors.

Mr. George H. Weyerhaeuser, Jr. is replacing Mr. Richard Gozon, Executive Vice President of Pulp, Paper & Packaging at Weyerhaeuser Company. Mr. Weyerhaeuser is the Senior Vice President of Technology for Weyerhaeuser Company, and is responsible for Corporate Research and Development. Mr. Weyerhaeuser joined the company in 1978 and became Vice President of Manufacturing for Weyerhaeuser Pulp and Paper in 1990. He served as President and CEO of Weyerhaeuser Canada from 1993 to 1998, and currently serves as the Chairman of the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada, and Chairman of the Canadian National Advisory Board on Forestry Research.
