Atlanta, Georgia, -- April 24, 2002--
The Institute of Paper Science and Technology recently
welcomed Mr. Dale Stahl and Dr. Richard Olson to the
Board of Trustees. Mr. Dale Stahl, CEO, of Inland Paperboard
and Packaging, Inc. and Dr. Richard Olson, alumni trustee
and former CEO of Champion International, have joined
a group that has historically included some of the most
outstanding leaders of the pulp and paper industry.
Mr.
Dale E. Stahl replaces Mr. William B. Howes on the Board.
Bill Howes will retire the position of chairman of Inland
this year. In May of 2001, Dale Stahl was named chief
executive officer of Inland Paperboard and Packaging,
Inc. Mr. Stahl joined Inland in 2000 and has served as
president and chief operating officer of Inland and as
a group vice president of Temple-Inland Inc. since that
time.
Mr. Stahl holds a bachelor of science
degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, a master of science
from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a master
of business administration from the Pennsylvania State
University. He brings more than twenty years of experience
in the paper industry, including experience serving as
president and chief operating officer of Gaylord Container
Corporation for twelve years.
Dr.
Richard Olson returns to the Board of Trustees after
being elected by the alumni of IPST as the designated
alumni trustee. Dr. Olson replaces Dr. Bob Moran, Senior
Vice President of Bowater Inc., in this role. Previous
to this, Dr. Olson served as trustee when he was chairman
and chief executive officer of Champion International
Corporation.
Dr. Olson is a Chicago native and
holds an A.B. degree in chemistry form Knox College and
an M.A. and Ph.D. in paper chemistry from the Institute
of Paper Science and Technology. He joined Champion in
1967 as a senior project engineer and rose through a
series of engineering and management positions to chairman
and CEO. Champion was acquired by International Paper
Company in 2000 making International Paper the world's
#1 producer of forest products. Dr. Jim Ferris says, "We
are extremely pleased that Dick Olson has returned to
our Board of Trustees. He has a vast knowledge of the
paper industry and the Institute, and we will value his
advice and counsel".
In
March of this year, Temple-Inland Inc. acquired Gaylord
Container Corporation. The former Chairman and CEO of
Gaylord, Marvin Pomerantz, has served as IPST's Chairman
this past year. With the acquisition, Mr. Pomerantz leaves
the Board and retires after over 40 years in the pulp
and paper industry. Dr. Jim Ferris, President of IPST
says, " Marvin Pomerantz is a strong advocate of
education, and we have greatly appreciated his guidance
as trustee and chairman. Although Marvin is leaving the
Board, and the pulp and paper industry, it is our hope
that he will stay connected to IPST, and our missions,
and help us along the difficult road ahead for our institution
and our industry".
Mr.
Pomerantz is replaced as Chairman by Mr. A. D. "Pete" Correll,
Chairman and CEO of Georgia-Pacific Corporation. Pete
Correll is the former Chairman of IPST's Board, and
has agreed to occupy Mr. Pomerantz's vacant position
until it is filled next year by the Vice Chairman,
John A. Luke, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer
of MeadWestvaco.
