Institute of Paper
Science and Technology Announces Leadership Transition
ATLANTA—December 18, 2002— A.D. “Pete” Correll,
chairman and CEO of Georgia-Pacific and chairman
of the board of the Institute of Paper Science and
Technology [IPST], today announced that Dr. James
L. Ferris, president of IPST, will step down upon
the merger of IPST with the Georgia Institute of
Technology on June 30, 2003.
Ferris has been president of IPST since 1996 and has recently
completed the organization’s search for the best merger
partner. Pete Correll says, “Jim Ferris has been an outstanding
leader for the Institute the past seven years. In addition
to dramatically growing the Institute in his early years as
president, he has recently orchestrated the merger of IPST
into Georgia Tech to both broaden the technology resources
available for industry-focused research and provide a more
stable financial base as the paper industry goes through its
continuing period of consolidation.”

In a simultaneous
announcement, Jean-Lou Chameau, provost of Georgia
Tech, announced that a national search would begin
immediately for a new director of “IPST at
Georgia Tech,” the new name for the organization
after the merger. Dr. Chameau noted, “Jim Ferris
has been, and will continue to be, very helpful to
both organizations in making this merger a success,
and we appreciate his valuable assistance.”
Jim Ferris expressed his appreciation to the IPST community
today for seven years of support and told them, “the
merger brings an exciting new era for IPST and the industry,
and it is both timely and appropriate that a new director be
recruited to create and lead this new multidisciplinary research
institute at Georgia Tech.”
Ferris will remain responsible for the operation of IPST until
June 30, 2003. A national search for the new director will
begin immediately with a target of having him or her in place
on July 1, 2003.
