ATLANTA—February 6, 2003—In
Trials of an Expert Witness, Dr. Derek Page will share
his experience as an expert witness in a case of alleged
infringement of patents for the manufacture of paper
plates. Having previously been a researcher and research
manager, Dr. Page found that the paradigm shift to
the legal world was invigorating, challenging, and
amusing, but, in the end, he had no regrets that he
did not pursue a career in law.
The seminar will be held at 11:00
a.m. on Friday, February 14, in the Kress Auditorium
at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology. Dr.
Page, known for his dry wit and excellent storytelling
ability, promises that, “There will be a moral
to the story!”
Professor Page obtained his bachelor’s,
Master’s, and Ph.D degrees from Gonville and Caius
College, Cambridge University. Following his formal education,
he opted to carry out research in industry, joining the
British Paper and Board Research Association in 1955.
In 1964, he moved to Montreal to work at the Pulp and
Paper Research Institute of Canada. His research career
has been devoted to the subject of paper physics (the
term used to describe the materials science of paper).
He retired from PAPRICAN in 1994
as Director of Research, Physical Sciences, to pursue
a second career in teaching and consulting. He has been
Scientific Editor of the Journal of Pulp and Paper Science
since its founding in 1974. He is currently Distinguished
Professor of Physics at IPST and teaches an advanced
course in paper physics in the winter months. He has
authored many papers and received many awards.
