Fiber Chemical Modifications Induced in Pulping/Bleaching

Part of the E.R.C. Program

Increase the value of kraft and mechanical pulp fibers by 25%. This will be accomplished by developing (1) modified pulping, bleaching, and papermaking technologies to retain > 98% of the inherent fiber strength, (2) methods to tailor pulp fiber strength and surface properties for specific end-uses, and (3) novel papermaking technologies that maximize bond strength, especially between mechanical and chemical pulp fibers. The outcome of this program will be an integrated technical solution providing new fundamental platforms for product innovation based on new information, concepts, and insights into fiber/web mechanical or chemical behavior that permit the introduction of new or greatly improved functionality to existing products or provide the basis for new products in new markets.
